The law is equal for everyone and the procedure following the arrest of the Croatian land forces' commander, Lieutenant General Mladen Kruljac, will be fast, fair and based on facts, President Ivo Josipovic said on Friday ahead of the beginning of Croatia Summit in Dubrovnik.

"I would emphasise that the law is equal for everyone. I personally and the armed forces support all operations taken by relevant state agencies to clarify suspicions," Josipovic said, expressing his confidence that the procedure will be fast and fact-based and the outcome fair. Earlier on Friday, General Kruljac was arrested at the order of the Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK).

The president said that the land forces were functioning normally.

"As for the further functioning of the land forces and the army in general, I have talked with the Armed Forces' Chief-of-Staff and it is completely certain that the Armed Forces will keep functioning normally, with no halts in their work," Josipovic said.

The president, who is the military supreme commander, said that he had not yet received a request for sending Kruljac into retirement.

"We are now at the beginning of the procedure and we will see how it will develop. His (Kruljac's ) deputy has taken his duty," Josipovic said.

According to the defence ministry's statement, the command system in the land forces functions normally and they are currently commanded by Kruljac's deputy, Brigadier General Zvonko Peternel.
