The parliamentary Credentials and Privileges Commission recommended on Thursday that Parliament grant a request by the national anti-corruption office USKOK to strip the independent MP and Mayor of Varazdin, Ivan Cehok, of immunity so he could be prosecuted on suspicion of abuse of office.
Parliament received USKOK's request on Wednesday, and the Commission unanimously approved it on Thursday. Parliament is expected to vote on the request on Friday.
USKOK says that there are reasonable grounds for suspicion that Cehok has committed a crime of conspiracy to commit crime and three crimes of abuse of office and powers.
According to media reports, Cehok is being investigated for irregularities relating to an exchange of land near the Varazdin cemetery and for deals relating to a waste management project.
