Croatian Parliament Speaker and chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Main Committee Josip Leko said on Saturday there was no split between the SDP and the Croatian People's Party (HNS), adding that public debates and different opinions were values in democratic societies.

"We as a coalition agreed that through our policy we will change the direction of Croatia's economic development, that we will organise state records and state functions and this is what we shall do. Under what pace and by which moves we shall do it is a matter of a public debate, expertise and political decisions. Everything will be all right," Leko told reporters, asked to comment on a split between the SDP and the HNS concerning a draft law on real estate taxes.

The HNS on Friday objected to the imposition of real estate tax but said that in principle it supported the Finance Ministry's effort to follow the best European practice with regard to this tax.

However, in an open public debate it is necessary to retain the positions agreed with the coalition partners, especially the principle that no property which the owner uses to live in can be taxed, the HNS said in a statement.
