The arrest of Ratko Mladic is good news not just for Croatia, but for the entire region, Europe and humanity as a whole, Croatian President Ivo Josipovic said on Thursday in his initial comment on the apprehension of the Bosnian Serb wartime military commander wanted by the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

"It's definitely good news for the entire region, for Europe and for humanity as a whole," Josipovic said during his official visit to Estonia.

Josipovic said that this was the time to remember all the victims of Bosnian Serb forces under Mladic's command. "The whole international community and I, too, expect a fair trial to assess his guilt and punishment."

Josipovic said that Mladic's arrest was "a big and important step" for Serbia with regard to its European Union membership ambitions and for relations in the region.

"This step will help improve relations in the entire region, especially those between Serbia and Bosnia," Josipovic said.
