Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic has sent a letter to Pope Francis congratulating him on the election as the new pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, the government's public relations office said in a statement on Thursday.

"Holy Father, it is my great honour to extend my best wishes to Your Holiness on the election as the 266th pontiff," he said wishing him a successful long and blessed pontificate, founded on peace, solidarity, human dignity, tolerance and support to the weakest and poorest.

I look forward to the successful cooperation with Your Holiness and further promotion of relations between Croatia and the Holy See.

Argentinian cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was named the new pope on Wednesday and took the name Francis.

He is the first Jesuit to become pope.
