President Mesic refuses to pardon Petrac

Croatian President Stjepan Mesic has signed a decision refusing Hrvoje Petrac's request for clemency, according to unofficial sources at the Office of the President.

The decision, which will soon be published in the Official Gazette, is inline with a proposal from the Pardons Commission which last week turned downPetrac's request for pardon.

Petrac has been in prison since 2005, serving a combined sentence of sevenand a half years for instigating the kidnapping of retired general VladimirZagorec's underage son and Novi Marof businessman Miroslav Matkun.

He is to be released in March 2013.

According to data published by the Pardons Commission, in his two terms inoffice Mesic has pardoned 761 convicts out of 4,650 who applied for clemency.
