Vladimir Zagorec, Croatia's former assistant defence minister who has been in prison for abuse of powers, will soon be released on parole, Zagorec's attorney Visnja Drenski Lasan told the press without revealing the exact date when her client was to be released.

"Earlier this week, the Justice Ministry's Parole Board granted my client's request and he will soon be released on parole," the lawyer told the press.

The former assistant defence minister was sentenced to prison for taking USD 5 million in jewels from a Defence Ministry safe when leaving his post in 2000.

Zagorec was arrested in Vienna where he had been living since 2000, and after his arrest he was extradited to Croatia.
