Serbian police arrested 15 persons in an operation against the extremist Islamic Wahhabi movement launched on Saturday morning in the Sandzak region in southwest Serbia, Belgrade's media said.

Mobile phones and computers have been confiscated from those arrested, said Interior Minister Ivica Dacic.

"An operation against the extremist Islamic Wahhabi movement began at five this morning on the territory of Novi Pazar, Sjenica and Tutin," he told Tanjug news agency.

Police Director Milorad Veljovic told Beta news agency 18 buildings were searched and that the seized items were sent for analysis.

He said the operation was over and that it would be estimated later if it was necessary to arrest more people.

Mevlid Jasarevic, a 23-year-old militant Islamist from Sandzak, shot at the US embassy compound in Sarajevo with a machine gun on Friday, wounding a police officer. Jasarevic was neutralised by a sharpshooter in a police and special unit intervention and was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to his upper leg.
