Asked about the European Union monitoring of Croatia, the president of the Social Democratic Party, Zoran Milanovic, told reporters in Karlovac on Thursday that Croatia should not fear the monitoring process, adding however it would be better if Croatia was not monitored because that would be a sign of trust in Croatia.

Obviously there is a lack of confidence in Croatia, given that we cannot go without monitoring, Milanovic told reporters after a convention of the local SDP branch.

He said he was confident the negotiations would be concluded by the end of June when the ratification process would be launched and a referendum held.
