Representatives of Serb from northern Kosovo agreed with Serbian President Boris Tadic on Sunday they would work on the implementation of an agreement on solving the crisis in northern Kosovo, reached with KFOR, as this is in the interest of peace.

The Serbian President's Office issued a statement after the meeting which lasted until late Sunday evening, saying that "at the talks they agreed that peace and unity were an imperative and that the international institutions in Kosovo - KFOR and EULEX - must remain neutral."

The head of the Kosovo-Mitrovica district, Radenko Nedeljkovic, said after the talks that representatives of Serbs from northern Kosovo informed Tadic of the security situation and told him they insisted on the strict respect of the UN security Council Resolution 1244.

Nedeljkovic said it was agreed that cooperation with the international community would continue for which they had full support of Serbian institutions.

He however, did not say if all three roadblocks set up by Serbs in northern Kosovo would be removed, adding that traffic and freedom of movement would not be disturbed.

Serbian Minister for Kosovo Goran Bogdanovic reiterated that four predominantly Serb municipalities in northern Kosovo would hold assembly sessions on Tuesday, adding it was up to them to make a decision, but also expressing conviction "they are reasonable and responsible people."

Erhard Buehler, commander of the NATO-led peacekeeping forces in Kosovo (KFOR), on Friday reached agreement with representatives of the Serbian government and the Kosovo government on ways to resolve the current crisis in the north of Kosovo.

The crisis in Kosovo broke out two weeks ago when Kosovo special police forces seized the border crossings Jarinje and Brnjak in northern Kosovo controlled by local Serbs in order to enforce a ban on imports from Serbia in response to a Serbian ban on imports from Kosovo. This prompted local Serbs to set up roadblocks. One Kosovo policeman was killed in the ensuing violence and last Friday KFOR closed down the two border crossings.
