General Kruljac questioned by USKOK in Osijek

The commander of the Croatian Land Forces, General Mladen Kruljac, reportedly suspected by the Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK) of abuse of office in connection with unlawful sale and purchase of land in the eastern municipality of Sibinj, was interrogated by the USKOK office in Osijek on Saturday.

After a three-hour questioning, General Kruljac and another suspect in this case, Zdravko Sockovic, the leader of Slavonski Brod county branch of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), left the USKOK office in Osijek at about 1400 hrs Saturday, escorted by the police.

Two more suspects, Sibinj municipal head Ivica Batinic and former councilman Ivan Miskovic according to unofficial reports, were brought to the USKOK office for questioning at 1315 hrs today.

Upon the conclusion of the interrogations, USKOK investigators are expected to file a request for launching an investigation and for setting detention for the suspects with the Osijek County Court's investigating judge who will decide on the matter.

After the questioning, Kruljac's lawyer Marko Dumancic said that his client had actively presented his defence and denied all charges.

Dumancic told reporters that the presentation of the defence was long and detailed.

According to unofficial information, entrepreneur Ivan Rimac and haulier Zeljko Garic were also interrogated before Kruljac.
