Former HPB chief Josip Protega arrested

The former chairman of the state-owned Croatian postal savings bank Hrvatska Postanska Banka (HPB), Josip Protega, was arrested at the Bregana border crossing with Slovenia on Saturday afternoon, on his way back from a skiing trip in Austria, the police said.

Protega is suspected, along with six other people, of abuse of office andfinancial wrongdoing from 2006 until 2009. The other suspects have beenarrested before and remanded in custody for 30 days.

Protega, who was accompanied by his lawyer at the time of the arrest, willbe detained for a pre-trial investigation, the police said.
