Firefighters managed to defend homes in the residential area of Rudine in the Split hinterland on Monday afternoon, however, several holiday cottages and cars were damaged in the wildfire that erupted earlier in the day.

The local fire-fighting units' commander told the press that they had also requested for assistance from the armed forces, if necessary later in the evening.

The commander Milivoj Taslak said that no exact data on damage had been still available.

The brush fire is still raging in the hills above the residential area, and firefighters are braced for winds that may make things worse.

The Split airport, located in Resnik, was closed to traffic from 1530 to 1730 hrs Monday due to heavy smokes caused by the Rudine fire. The traffic resumed at 1700 hrs.
