The festival's founder, US playwright Michael Lederer, said on Monday that the economic and financial crisis in Europe had also affected culture, resulting in failure to raise adequate funding for the event.

The festival was to have featured, among other things, top productions of three Shakespeare plays as well as world premieres of contemporary theatre work. It was also to have included the rock opera The Wall by Pink Floyd, performed by the rock group Just Floyd.
