Croatia's Supreme Court has rejected an appeal of former Croatian First Deputy Prime Minister Radimir Cacic against a verdict regarding a fatal road accident in Hungary and, thus, upheld Zagreb County Court's judgement that ruled the same way as the Hungarian relevant court, sentencing this former Croatian official to 22 months of prison for having caused a car accident on a motorway in Hungary in January 2010 in which two people were killed.

The decision of the Supreme Court was forwarded to Zagreb County Court on Wednesday afternoon.

In this way, the judgement on the prison sentence has become final.

The Zagreb County Court's spokesman Kresimir Devicic said that the next step would be to provide Cacic with the judgement.

The court in Kaposvar last November sentenced Cacic to 22 months' imprisonment for causing a car accident on a motorway in Hungary in January 2010 in which two people were killed. Cacic immediately resigned as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy and asked the Hungarian authorities for permission to serve his sentence in Croatia. He will be allowed to do so only after the decision of the Croatian judicial authorities is approved by the Hungarian Minister of Justice.

With the full acceptance of the Hungarian ruling, the Zagreb court also decided this January that the convict would be eligible for an early release after serving at least half the sentence.

Cacic's lawyers in the meantime asked the Supreme Court to render a more lenient sentence but the court rejected their appeal.
