The Croatian Parliament's Credentials and Privileges Commission on Monday stripped independent deputy Ivan Cehok of his parliamentary immunity and thus allowed that criminal proceedings be launched against him.

Cehok, a former mayor of the northern city of Varazdin, has been indicted for signing a harmful contract with the city-owned company for the maintenance of green areas "Parkovi" whose former director, Miljenko Pticek, has been indicted for inciting Cehok to sign the deal.

Although the Office of the Chief State Prosecutor asked the parliament to allow that criminal proceedings be launched against Cehok about ten days ago, the Credentials and Privileges Commission on Friday failed to secure a quorum and did not discuss this request.

The indictment against Cehok and Pticek was issued by the Office of the Municipal Prosecutor in Koprivnica, charging Cehok with defrauding the city budget of 4.46 million kuna because in March 2006, when he was Varazdin's mayor, acting at Pticek's instigation, he signed with him a contract on a real estate swap even though he was aware that the contract was harmful and that it would cause extensive financial damage to the city budget.

The parliament, at the proposal of the Credentials and Privileges Commission, lifted Cehok's immunity for the first time on 9 June, granting the anti-corruption agency USKOK's request that Cehok be immediately arrested and detained for the alleged wrongdoings with the city land. Cehok was released pending trial on HRK 2.6 million bail, after being detained for weeks.

The Credentials commission today dismissed the request by Prosecutor Zvonko Kunic from Velika Mlaka who asked parliament to strip Goran Beus Richembergh of the Croatian People's Party (HNS) of his parliamentary immunity, because of a private lawsuit for slander.
