The Constitutional Court on Wednesday dismissed as unfounded a constitutional lawsuit by former general Vladimir Zagorec against the verdict in the case "jewels" which sentenced him to seven years in prison, without the right to appeal.

Zagorec was sentenced to seven years in prison by a verdict handed down by the Zagreb County Court and later upheld by the Supreme Court, for taking USD 5 million in jewels from a Defence Ministry safe when leaving his post in 2000.

Along with the jail time, Zagorec's property worth HRK 39.4 million was confiscated.

The Constitutional court said that the fibnal verdict did not violate Zagorec's rights as he claimed in the constitutional lawesuit. Zagorec claimed, among other things. that his constitutional right to a fair trial and the right to appeal had been violated.

After the verdict in the "jewels" case became final, Zagorec, once the most decorated general, was stripped of his decorations and medals.

Zagorec is also indicted in the case of an unlawful renovation of a summer house of former Zagreb City Assembly vice president Antun Sporer.
